Harvesting in Brotato: how it grows, what the Crown really does, and the Endless penalty
Harvesting pays out Materials and XP every wave and then grows. The growth rule has a rounding quirk that changes which items are worth buying, and it stops working in Endless Mode.
Numbers are from the Brotato Wiki as of 28 Oct 2026 and run through the Spudlab Harvesting calculator. Not checked in-game. The calculator ignores Entrepreneur's bonus and anything that changes Harvesting mid-run.
Harvesting is the economy stat. At the end of every wave you're paid Materials and XP equal to your Harvesting, and then the stat itself goes up a little. Nothing about that sounds complicated, but the way it grows catches people out, and so does the way it ends.
The rule
From the wiki, in order:
- When a wave ends, you gain Materials and XP equal to your current Harvesting.
- Then Harvesting grows by 5% of itself, rounded up.
Negative Harvesting works differently: you lose Materials and XP each wave and it doesn't grow back.
The rounding is what matters. 5% of 8 is 0.4, and rounding up makes it 1. So 8 Harvesting becomes 9, then 10, then 11. In fact, at 5% anything up to 20 Harvesting grows by exactly 1 per wave, because 5% of 20 is 1. The "compound interest" only starts to show once you're past 20.
What it adds up to
Here's the same stat in four setups over a 20-wave run. "Start" is the Harvesting you have at the end of wave 1, and the rate is the per-wave growth.
- Start 8, 5% growth
- Start 8, 13% (Crown)
- Start 20, 8% (Farmer)
- Start 20, 16% (Farmer + Crown)
| Setup | Wave 5 | Wave 10 | Wave 20 | Total by wave 20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start 8, 5% | 12 | 17 | 33 | 371 |
| Start 8, 13% (Crown) | 16 | 33 | 121 | 916 |
| Start 20, 8% (Farmer) | 29 | 46 | 106 | 1,064 |
| Start 20, 16% (Farmer + Crown) | 39 | 86 | 389 | 2,631 |
"Wave 5, 10 and 20" are the Harvesting values at the end of those waves, and the last column is the running total of what you've been paid.
What the Crown is worth
The Crown is an item that adds 8% to the growth rate: "Harvesting increases by an additional 8% at the end of a wave." On a 5% character it takes you to 13%, and on Farmer, who already has an extra 3%, to 16%.
Compare the first two rows. Taking the Well Rounded start (8) from 5% to 13% takes the 20-wave total from 371 to 916, roughly two and a half times as much. On the Farmer row, adding the Crown moves it from 1,064 to 2,631. So the Crown is worth more the more Harvesting you already have, and when you buy it matters as well: it's only paying you back for the waves still to come.
Flat Harvesting versus growth
Flat Harvesting items give you a stat boost today. A few from the item data:
- Fertilizer +8 (-1 Melee Damage), White Flag +5 (-5% enemies), Peaceful Bee +4
- Little Frog +10, Wheat +10, Starfish +10 (but +15% enemy damage)
- Wheelbarrow +16 (-1 armor), Bowler Hat +18, Tractor +40 (-8% damage)
- Blood Donation +40, at the cost of 1 damage per second
Which is better, flat or the Crown? Run both on the Well Rounded start. An extra 10 Harvesting at the start (18 instead of 8, still at 5%) takes the 20-wave total from 371 to 707, a gain of about 336 Materials and XP, or roughly 34 for every point. The Crown from the start (13% instead of 5%) takes it from 371 to 916, a gain of about 545. So the Crown beats a +10 item if you get it early, and loses to it if you only find it halfway, because it can only pay you for the waves that are left. Flat Harvesting has the same problem, just a smaller one: it also pays from the moment you buy it, and the early materials are the ones that buy you weapons.
The weapon class Support gives +5 Harvesting at two weapons, up to +25 at six. And the character picks matter a lot: Farmer starts at +20 and grows 3% faster, Saver at +15, Arms Dealer at +30, Fisherman at +20, Old at +10 and Well Rounded at +8. Entrepreneur increases Harvesting modifications by 50%, Hunter reduces them by 100%, and Loud loses 3 Harvesting at the end of every wave.
Endless Mode
After wave 20 the rules flip. In Endless Mode, from wave 21 the growth stops and you lose 20% of your Harvesting each wave. A stat sitting on 100 would be around 80 after the first Endless wave, then about 64, then 51, and after six waves it's down to roughly a quarter of what it was.
The practical meaning is that Harvesting you buy once you're past wave 20 is close to wasted. If you plan to keep going into Endless, the money should go into damage and survival instead.
